I think if it appears you facilitated or made it possible for someone to make an unauthorized copy of a recording you would be on the hook. If the backup stays within your control it's one thing, or if you could show that you took reasonable steps to avoid letting others have access to it. People backup their music to their hard drive, and it's not a problem until that hard drive is accessible by others. Saying "it's not my fault someone made their own copy of the music on my hard drive" wouldn't work either, for the same reasons.

Honestly MySpace is a pretty good place to go for this sort of thing.

Hi Guys,
am in the same boat looking for new music or bands/groups worth buying. ever so slightly off topic, my better half got me XM for fathers day. It is amazing the amount of stuff you can find and listen to, and the machine I got records also. It makes me sick to have to pay for radio, but I listen all day at work and there is always music coming from the altecs when I am home! not working for them or selling for them, but its been some of the best money we have spent, entertainment wise. I am just so tired of the radio giants that refuse to play anything other than stairway to freebird.

Another place you might want to try is SpiralForg, where downloads are free, being supported by advertising on the site's web pages. The downloaded files are wma with copy protection, but they would satisfy your desire to check out new music and remain legal.

I have had XM since the beginning because thats the only radio I can get here!
I'm not sure you all are following me with what I want to do. Recording from the XM or downloading from the internet are rather poor quality as compared to buying or burning a CD.

I think we're all following you Gary, it just seems most of us aren't ready to follow you all the way into the courtroom...

Gary I think the idea would be to use the poor quality avenues as a way of assessing whether it is music you like or not, and then purchasing high quality recordings of those you like.

Personally, I own literally hundreds (probably over 1000) CD's. I DJ's for about 20 years and built up a huge (completely legal) collection of music. Plus I do sound for lots of bands and they just give me cd's all the time.
As for the statement about sending poor quality samples out and then buying the real deal if we like it, I would venture to say that those of us on this board would be likely to do so, but unfortunately, most of the people these days are so used to compressed music with no dynamic range that they won't care if it's a 64bit MP3. My son had satellite radio, and I thought it would be an excellent way to play between set music and stuff for live shows (yea, I know, not legal!) but the quality was so poor, I just couldn't do it, but most people could really care less about the quality.

I hear you loud and clear Bfish!
Selmerdave, I guess it is a good idea but then I get so little time to truely "Listen", I can't see wasting it with inferior quality recordings.
XM works great for background music and the Ipod is fine for out in the boat while fishing but the true measure of great tunes is when I sit in front of the Altecs and play it as clean as I can get it.
I can still dig out old albums from before when my system was lacking that never really impressed me then but do now! My search is always for stuff that sounds particularly good on nice altecs driven by a nice system.
As an example, my buddy has a nice system but plays all his music in the surround mode. More speakers=more sound and is better to him. I like it best with just the 19s and sitting in the sweet spot.
